In this session, we will discuss how to use read alouds with students to help them with their SEL skills and develop strategies to adapt to the unexpected changes. Topics that will be cover coping skills, kindness, test anxiety, conflict resolution, etc.

El Dictado is a powerful tool that can be used in any language to target various components of word study/vocabulary and mechanics. When integrated effectively, El Dictado can offer students a more contextualized way to practice their spelling, punctuation and fluency. El Dictado can be integrated in all grade levels and help tackle the grade-level fundamental language skills that are needed for students to continue developing their Spanish. In this session, I will show ways that El Dictado can be integrated in an elementary classroom using examples of students work and suggested formats for incorporating it into the daily classroom routine.

Deciding whether to request a speech and language evaluation for a student is a complex decision. It should, of course, always be done as an educational team after reviewing the concerns at hand. In this session, we will discuss key factors of multilingual speech and language development to keep in mind in the classroom when deciding if the student's needs warrant a referral.

The goal of my session is to provide teachers with text annotating strategies by genre. Teachers will be able to guide their students to annotate text by using the Trifold paper organizer while the students read a digital text. The purpose of this trifold is to give students an opportunity to think about the text they are reading while gaining deep comprehension. This trifold includes three columns where students’ expectation is to read 3 times the given text and annotate each time they read. For the first read in fiction text, for example, students will annotate the elements of the genre. Second read character analysis, and last read lesson learned and summary.

Overcrowded classrooms, underpaid teachers, and standardized testing- oh my! The education system is broken, and the teacher voice/perspective is one that tends to be overlooked or sometimes flat out ignored. It doesn't help that there is a deeply rooted fear of retaliation among educators that prevents many from using their teacher voice to speak up and advocate for themselves and their students. This is the tutorial/pep talk you didn't know you needed on using your teacher voice to advocate and create systemic change.

Emotional health has become a critical issue in education today and teachers are being asked to provide lessons on the topic. As good as these lessons are, we can gain learning time by focusing on Abraham Maslow's concept of a hierarchy of needs. This concept was first introduced to us by Maslow in 1943 and though not as often mentioned in education today, it is still foundational for learning in every classroom. Today our students are coming in with gaps in their basic needs, but of more crucial importance, is their psychological needs of belonging and self-esteem. It is our responsibility as teachers to help students feel that they can connect and trust the community with which they learn and to help them feel safe within it. Through this presentation you will gain the knowledge to implement morning meetings and understand why the 3Cs of congregating, communicating, and connecting are important to the emotional health of your students and help you open their minds to learning.

Many students find writing difficult because they are simply afraid. This session, Putting the “I” back in Writing, will discuss various activities centered around the students to help ease them into becoming confident writers.

The presentation will primarily focus on how to assess and plan literacy instruction for biliterate readers’ various needs, especially in a small group setting. The presentation includes real videos of reading specialists working with bilingual readers on targeted interventions to support Spanish literacy. More importantly, reading interventions are created by combining reading research-based practices with linguistic practices in order to support the literacy needs of our bilingual readers. Long are the days of watching popular names teach students in reading and then asking yourself as a bilingual practitioner, “How does this look for my bilingual readers?”. Videos will include reading strategies and interventions in both English and Spanish and with students in bilingual grade levels Kindergarten to 5th grade.

We will discuss linguistic oppression and how that affects our students in developing positive bilingual identities. We will also explore different mentor texts with translanguaging practices that could be used in the classroom as a way to embrace bilingualism.

It is never too early to expose children to cognates! The use of cognates is a very efficient way to support the simultaneous development of Spanish and English. Cognates can help broaden students’ vocabulary and help build confidence as students develop proficiency in both languages. This session focuses on how to get cognates word wall started in a K-2 classroom.

Children are natural explorers that learn through play, discovery, and experiences. We often think of outdoor play when we think of sensory and exploration however, over the years I've discovered the importance and benefits of incorporating sensory play in the classroom. As teachers we might be hesitant when we hear "sensory play" because we think of how messy or how much time and money we will have to invest to get started but I am here to help and guide you through it all!
